How to provide effective feedback and why it is so important

Business leaders are in a unique position to influence the progression of our teams, a big part of which includes giving feedback to others to ensure we are fostering a healthy and cohesive working environment says Frances Bearne.

OPINION: Today’s reality presents many challenges that affect our businesses and, as a result, our staff. Returning to the office after so long at home has impacted how we communicate with each other and has stunted the development of essential soft skills, especially for those who started their careers during the lockdown and have never had to navigate working relationships at the office or for those leaders who haven’t flexed some of their skills in a while due to remote workingBusiness leaders are in a unique position to influence the progression of our teams, a big part of which includes giving feedback to others to ensure we are fostering a healthy and cohesive working environment.  I recently worked with the leader of a company who discovered through their engagement survey that their people didn’t understand how performance was measured. They didn’t have good, trusted relationships with their managers. As part of the effective feedback workshops and training I run, I worked with them to implement a new coaching process where managers met regularly with staff one-on-one to check in on how they were, answer questions, understand where they were at in relation to their goals, help with any obstacles and provide feedback – both positive and constructive.
